10 Things to do this Holy Week

Today marks the highlight of the Lenten season - the Holy Week. Whether you’re a devoted Christian or not, this long holiday is a good time to reflect, re-examine ourselves or just be with our families.

Speaking of long holidays which most of us anticipate, how are you going to spend the rest of the week, Mommies?

Well if you’re going to ask me, I wish I could go out and travel if only I had the luxury of time. But with my current situation, “staycation” will be more appropriate. And by that I mean to just stay in the house with my hubby and two kids (12 and 2).

Anyway, I listed down 10 things we can do this Holy Week if you don’t have any plans yet. Depending on your mood ( if you’re feeling spiritual, inspired or drained) you can try some ideas below.

Things you can do this Holy Week:

  1. Visita Iglesia (Church visit)
Visita Iglesia
St. Michael Archangel Basilica Minor (Tayabas City)
Exploring different churches together with my kids is on my bucket list. I admit I’m not the religious type but I’d love for them to learn some traditions I grew up with and for them to see many beautiful churches the Philippines has to offer.

So If you’re feeling spiritual, why not find the quietness and appreciate the rich history of that ancient architecture. Remember to say your prayer, light a candle and visit at least 7 churches (by tradition). Oh, and don’t forget to snap some photos 😉

  1. Rest/Sleep
Feeling tired from all the day's work? Give yourself a break from the worries over small things. We all deserve this after a long tiring day.

A complete set of uninterrupted sleep (though may seem impossible for us nursing Moms) can make a huge difference to our well being. It makes us feel better, reduces stress, spurs our creativity etc.

Rest and sleep in general has some spiritual benefits too. Even the bible states the value of rest and restoration. Exodus chapter 20: 8-11, describes how God himself rested after he completed his work in 6 days.

So go ahead and snooze!

  1. Reflect

I’m not sure about you but I feel like everywhere I look, everything seems solemn and slow during Holy Week. Just by looking at the stillness outside opens up the chance for some introspection. If this is you who want to re-examine life from the inside-out or search for a new meaning, then try this.

  1. Read a good book
Still, on reflection, this week’s a good time to pick up new reads. I recommend The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren or The 5 Second Rule: Transform Your Life, Work, and Confidence with Everyday Courage by Mel Robbins. You can also read the inspiring life stories of Audrey Hepburn, Jack Ma or Steve Jobs.

  1. Movie marathon

If you’re not so much into books, then grab a popcorn and watch these inspiring movies:
The Bible if you want to be reminded spiritually, Pursuit of Happyness, Forrest Gump, Eat Pray Love, Slumdog Millionaire, Finding Nemo. I bet you’ll feel more inspired after watching these.

  1. Reading of the Passion (Pabasa ng Pasyon)
Another solemn way to observe the Holy Week here in the Philippines is through “Pabasa ng Pasyon.” It is the Catholic devotion that involves continuous chanting of the “Pasyon” (a 16th Century epic poem that narrates the life, passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ). It is usually done with the elders and with the accompaniment of a guitar. I’m not sure though if this is still common in the Metro nowadays.

  1. Be Crafty

Are you feeling inspired to create something pretty? Make it fun for you and your kids! One of my goals this week is a DIY craft bunny for Easter. I’m sure my two years old will love it. There are tons of ideas you can find on Pinterest like the one from The Best Ideas for Kids.  Or you can make your own, just try to be creative! 😉

  1. Make a gratitude journal
Being grateful is one of the keys to happiness, do you believe that?  I do. And it’s been a constant practice ever since I heard the phrase  “count your blessings.” You may never know but you are so much blessed dear ones. Try writing and see.

  1. Go green

If you practice abstinence and want to make it meatless, then go green! Take out some veggies or fruits and prepare fresh, nutritious salad for the family. Or you may check out Oh My Veggies to get loads of ideas.

  1. Yoga
I’ve been meaning to do this but couldn’t find the time, or maybe I’ll start once I’m done with this post lol. Even if you’re a fitness enthusiast or not, doing yoga is such a great way to develop your strength and flexibility as much as it relaxes your mind and body (which I badly needed). And you can do this even at home.

New to yoga? Try searching youtube for more video tutorials or see this Yoga Poses for Beginners to get some help.

Do you have anything more to add to the list, Mommies? Let me know in the comments.

Hugs,
Joan
